Hadlow is a serene village located in the area of Tonbridge, Kent. The village is officially within the boundaries of Tonbridge and Malling District. It was originally known as 'Haeselholte' in Anglo Saxon times and there is evidence of a settlement in the Stone Age era. The manor of Hadlow, known as Court Lodge, was owned by the Knights Hospitaliers in the Middle Ages and has changed hands several times among the nobility. A new manor was built in 1635 and the property and associated buildings continued to change hands. The manor is currently Grade 1 listed and on the 1998 World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites. Today, the village displays some impressive older architecture, including two Tudor era inns. The River Bourne wends its way within the parish of Hadlow and villagers keep themselves busy with various leisure pursuits, such as the popular Hadlow Amateur Dramatic Society and historic cricket club.
Hadlow College is a wonderful educational facility in Hadlow, which was founded in 1960. Courses range from foundation level right up to full honours degrees and apprenticeships, which are land-based. There are other part time and leisurely courses too for adults. Subjects range from animal behaviour to tractor driving and there is a garden centre on the site, known as Broadview, which is open to visitors. The gardens at Hadlow College are open to the public and free to visit, with a specialism in hellebores, usually blossoming in the months of January and February.
Famous residents in Hadlow include William Caxton, the wordsmith, who brought the printing press to England and diedin 1491. It is believed that he was born in the village. Allison Fisher, snooker champ, also grew up in the settlement as did cricketer John Larkin (born 1726). Computer games inventor Stephen Crow was born there in 1965. Artist Bernard Hailstone (died 1987) was rather involved in the local community. He is credited with helping to save Hadlow Castle from demolition. A formerLord Mayor of London, John Rivers, was the lay rector. He died in 1584. Historian Joan Thirsk, who died in 2013, was enthused about Hadlow and wrote a number of books about the village.
