James the Chimney Sweep, working in and around Golden Green

Golden Green village is located not far from Tonbridge in the Medway valley, and close to Hadlow. Barnes Street hamlet is in the vicinity. Agriculture plays an important part of the economic well-being of residents in the area with a predominant focus on cereals and fruits. A number of residents also commute for work in other areas. The main Anglican church meets in a Grade II building, a tin tabernacle dating back to 1914. Two big incidents mark the history of the village - the Hartlake disaster when 30 migrant hop pickers died in the River Medway on October 20 1853. Their wagon overturned on Hartlake Bridge. A Farman F60 Goliath aeroplane was en route from Paris to Croydon on August 6 1924 when engine failure caused it to crash land at Golden Green. Passengers on board were injured.
