West Malling

West Malling is a popular market town within the district of Tonbridge and Malling in Kent. The town has an impressive retail mix but the history of the settlement is also of interest with a number of noteworthy buildings from the past such as St Mary's Abbey and St Leonard's Tower, as well as Ford House and the Prior's House. As West Malling has grown, so have associated developments, which include areas such as Mereworth and Wateringbury, and the etymologically linked East Malling. Maidstone Airport was developed in the respectable Kings Hill area, just two miles from West Malling. The airport saw action during the Second World War with RAF personnel based there. US Navy squadrons were also based there, later on during the 1960s. The airport closed in 1967. West Malling also claims to be the site of the first ever recorded cricket match in the county of Kent.

West Malling Railway Station, now known as West Malling for Kings Hill, provides a reliable and regular route for commuters to access other towns for work, such as Ashford and Maidstone. There is also a service up to London Victoria and journey times to reach the city of London take approx one hour for passengers. For commuters travelling by car and other forms of road transport, there is a good link via the West Malling Bypass, which draws away related traffic from the town's High Street and central areas. Commuter traffic, of course, also involves the other way with people living outside the town travelling into the commercial area to work. Habitual movements of which, considering West Malling's status as a market town, have been part of everyday life for many years.
