Map of Fordcombe
(Supplied by Google)
Fordcombe is a picturesque village in the Sevenoaks District of the county of Kent. It is five miles from Tunbridge Wells and within Penshurst Civil Parish. Known as 'Fordcomb-Green', a hamlet, until the mid 19th century. Agriculture played a major part in the settlement's development but it was the 19th century, as mentioned, which saw larger development. Chafford Mill boosted local employment with a sturdy trade in manufacturing paper and retail services needed to serve workers and their families. Queen Victoria once visited the mill, when she was a princess, and enjoyed being shown the various mechanical equipment, it was reported at the time. These service outlets stopped before the Second World War with the village shop closing in the 1990s. The mill had been bought out with its output transferred to Dover and this caused unemployment in Fordcombe. A grander building of note is Ashurst Park, south of the village, with a wonderful country estate.
