James the Chimney Sweep, working in and around Rusthall

Rusthall is a village which enjoys a snug, safe fire - as proven by the famous bonfire and fireworks event held each October. Villagers build up the bonfire during the day and start the event with a torchlit procession.

They certainly keep James the Sweep busy the rest of the time, making sure their homes have safe-to-use fireplaces and flues! The village itself, just two miles from Tunbridge Wells, was founded in the mid 1800s, around the tourism boom at the time, when nature lovers came to see 'Toad Rock', a rock structure on sandstone.

The name Rusthall itself derives from Anglo-Saxon, meaning a well of natural iron ('uuelle'). The association was made prevalent culturally when visitors stopped at Rusthall on their way to visit the spa waters at nearby Tunbridge Wells. Rusthall itself has bathing waters but they are disused in the present day. The settlement developed from a stately home called Rusthall, on Rusthall Common, and is currently a sound modern dwelling with great commuter routes via the railway to T Wells and further afield.
