About Plaxtol

Plaxtol is a village near the River Bourne, which has its own church, pub, primary school and other facilities in the vicinity. The name of Plaxtol stems from ‘play area’ in Old English, ‘plax’ and ‘toil’. The local reference is the big village green, a favourite play area for youngsters. Leisure is certainly an interest in Plaxtol, with its friendly atmosphere. There is a cricket club, which is popular and a distinctive interest in horses by villagers. Plaxtol has also seen a number of ‘famous’ residents, especially considering its size. There was the First Viscount of Brenchley, Walter Monckton, who was born in Plaxtol in 1891. A century later, another resident – Richard Tomlinson, lived in the village. He was a theatre director passionate about deconstructing myths on disability and did a lot of good work before he died in 2006. Richard was also the principal of the Thomas Delarue School for the Disabled in Tonbridge. Sir Lewis Hodges was another known resident, the former Deputy Lieutenant of Kent who was also Air Chief Marshal. Families known in the vicinity include the Weeks family, of which some five generations have worked the land, alongside paper mills. The Broad family are also linked to Plaxtol. Their name has been connected to the village since the 1700s. Individuals known from the family include Lord Lawrence Broad, who once owned a hughe chicken farm in West Kent. He died in 1789. Lady Natalie Broad is a member of the family who still visits the villages and retains convivial connections with villagers.
